I’m currently working on Health Dashboard Projects in the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Population Health, at NYU Langone Health. Geodesign builds greatly on a long history of work in geographic information science, computer-aided design, landscape architecture, and other environmental design fields. Once coursework is completed, PhD students move to the Comprehensive Exam, Qualifying Exam, and the writing of a dissertation, and final defense, if deemed appropriate by the doctoral committee. In the transition from coursework to exams, PhD students work on one paper beyond its original submission as coursework. The paper begins in the context of a departmental seminar, but often continues either in the context of an independent study, summer mentorship, or a second seminar with faculty consent. Upon the research paper’s acceptance, students begin preparing for their comprehensive exam.

Global social and environmental issues will increasingly become multiregional and multinational, and we therefore will need to plan in what should become one language. Part I of the book is about the necessary but sometimes difficult collaboration between designers and scientists, and also focuses on key aspects of study areas, scale, and size which influence how geodesign is organized and carried out. Part II presents Steinitz’s framework and addresses six key questions, and their related types of models, which must be integrated in geodesign. Part III features nine case studies that illustrate different ways of designing for change, while Part IV explores the future of geodesign in research, education, and practice. In an era marked by environmental challenges, from climate change to habitat loss, the importance of sustainable and environmentally-conscious design has never been more pronounced. Geographic design, with its inherent connection to the Earth’s landscapes, plays a pivotal role in promoting and embodying these principles.

In this unit students will explore the physical systems of the earth by studying maps outlining the physical characteristics of a region and the physical processes that shape the patterns of Earth's surface. In addition to map studies, students will also explore the region's history of natural disasters and its influence on the ecosystems where individuals live, and how the physical geography creates the unique characteristics of different hubs of civilization in the region. Students will also explore their region's natural resources and analyze the utilization of resources and their relationship to a country’s gross domestic product, through mapping and graphs. Students will analyze their compiled data and make claims as to how effectively resources are handled regionally. Through this process of learning about a region's physical geography and creating visual representations of those aspects students learn how a region’s physical geography helps form a distinct culture and economy. Students will research and study a number of current global issues (such as climate change, overpopulation, international drug trade), which has an impact on societies and individuals around the world.

The prospectus includes an argument with broad implications, demonstrates that the dissertation will make a contribution of knowledge and ideas to the field, demonstrates mastery of existing literature and discourses, and includes a plan and schedule for completion. The courses in the program constitute 21 quarter credit hours in total, and tuition is set at $450/credit. Tuition and fees are the same for California residents, out-of-state students, and international students. Tuition is paid by course upon individual course registration, so the total cost of the program is spread out over the time in which you are enrolled in the program. Students report spending an average of 10 hours per week, per course on completing coursework for this program -- however, this is just an average. Those students who consider themselves to be very proficient with the professional use of computers tend to move more quickly through assignments and activities, while students with more limited computer proficiency often require more time each week. Student workloads tend to be highest in the Intro course as well as when students choose to take multiple courses concurrently. PhD students are trained to teach courses in the history and theory of architecture while also engaging in studio pedagogy and curatorial work. In addition to the colloquium, PhD students take a series of approved courses both at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design and across campus. They select these courses in relation to their own research interests and in consultation with their primary advisor.

Admittedly, there was a spectacular segment in an early Treehouse of Horror Simpsons Halloween special, but with The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan proves just as adept as Matt Groening or Corman at bringing Poe to the screen. Flanagan created the series and serves as director alongside Michael Fimognari, with the two directing four episodes each. Executive producers include Flanagan and Trevor Macy through their Intrepid Pictures banner, as well as Fimognari and Emmy Grinwis.

Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere. This metaphor is representative of Roderick’s own mental deterioration.

The Usher patriarch then sits in a dilapidated mansion with Carl Lumbly’s Auguste Dupin (based on Poe’s famous recurring character who is considered the first detective in fiction) and offers him a confession. We then flash back a few weeks to when the Usher clan were on top of the world, having become Sackler-esque billionaires peddling opiates that have inflicted untold misery on the American public, and begin to watch their painful demise. Flanagan has form with making tributes to some of horror’s most beloved oeuvres.
